Download Plug-Ins Using the Packeteer Support Website

This method of upgrading the PacketWise software is a three-part process. First, you download the plug-in file from the Packeteer support website to your client workstation. Second, you FTP the file from your client workstation to the PacketShaper. Then, you reset the device.

Note: Xpress plug-ins work only on Xpress-capable units, and should not be downloaded/installed on non-Xpress units.

Download the Plug-In File

To download a plug-in file from the support website:

1. On the Packeteer support website, navigate to Software.

2. Log in to Software Download.

3. Enter the serial number of your unit.

4. Click the link to Packeteer Plug-ins.

5. Choose your current PacketWise version from the drop-down list. A list of plug-ins is displayed. These are the plug-ins available for the version of software you selected.

6. Select the plug-in file you want to download and follow the onscreen instructions.

7. Verify the file was downloaded successfully.

Copy the Plug-In File to the Unit

To FTP the plug-in file:

1. At the MS-DOS prompt, change to the directory where you downloaded the plug-in file.

2. To open an FTP session to the unit, type:

ftp <ipaddress>

where <ipaddress> is the IP address of the unit (for example, ftp 207.78.98.254). You can also type the domain name.

When you press Enter, the screen messages indicate that the connection has been made and that the server is ready.

3. Press Enter to bypass the user name.

4. Enter the unit's touch password.

5. Enter bin to go into binary mode.

6. To select the plug-in directory on the flash drive as the FTP destination, type:

cd 9.256/plg

7. To transfer the file to the unit, type:

put <filename>

where <filename> is the name of the file you are copying to the unit (for example, put edonkey.plg). After you press Enter, the file will be transferred.

8. Exit the FTP session.

Reset the Device

To activate the plug-in, you need to reset the device.

Using the CLI:

1. Access the CLI.

2. Enter reset.

Using the browser interface:

1. Click the setup tab in the navigation bar.

2. From the Choose Setup Page list, select unit resets.

3. Click reset device.

4. Click OK to reset. After a moment, the login screen will appear.

PacketWise will now be able to auto-classify using the classification module you downloaded. If you downloaded an Xpress plug-in, the new compression algorithm will be available to assign to individual classes or as the default dictionary.
