Assign Units to Different Configurations

When a unit running PacketWise version 7.0 or later subscribes to PolicyCenter, PolicyCenter creates a unique configuration at the top of the configuration tree, then assigns the unit to that configuration. These unique configurations are exclusive to the unit for which they were created—no other unit can be assigned to these unique configurations unless the configurations are renamed, or moved to another location within the configuration tree. If, however, you have manually created a new configuration, or moved or renamed a unique configuration, you can reassign any PacketShaper to the configuration. Each unit sharing a configuration must have a unique unit name. If you wish to reassign a unit to a configuration that already has a unit with the same name, you must first rename one of the units.

Note: When you subscribe a unit running PacketWise 5.x-6.x to PolicyCenter, its new configuration appears in the /default folder, instead of at the top of the configuration tree. You can assign a unit to these configurations at any time; it is not necessary to rename them or move them first. When you reassign a unit to a different configuration, it uses only the classes and settings from its new configuration, and leaves behind all classes or settings it applied from a previous configuration.

Reassign PacketShapers from one PolicyCenter configuration to another when you want to:

  • Relocate a newly added unit from its initial configuration to its intended destination configuration.

  • Move a unit from one location on the network to another. For example, if you relocated a PacketShaper from the San Francisco branch office to the Chicago branch office, you would also want to reassign that unit to a new configuration in PolicyCenter, moving it from the San Francisco configuration and assigning it to the Chicago configuration instead.

  • Change how a unit functions at its current location. Suppose you had a PacketShaper on your network whose sole function was use partitions to assign specific amounts of bandwidth to users at the branch offices. If you wanted to change the function of that PacketShaper to control unwanted traffic on the network, that PacketShaper could be reassigned to a configuration with never-admit or discard policies for many types of peer-to-peer traffic.

To assign a PacketShaper to a different configuration:

  1. Access the PolicyCenter browser interface, and select the configurations tab.

  2. Click on the unit name of the unit you wish to reassign. The unit options window opens.  show screen

  3. Click the radio button beside the Assign Unit to Different Configuration option.

  4. Click the Assign Unit to Different Configuration pull-down menu to select the unit's new configuration.

  5. Click apply changes.

  6. A pop-up window will appear and ask you to confirm that you want to assign the units to a different configuration. Click OK.

If you see the message "The configuration has changed" in a pop-up window, close this window and refresh the browser information. To refresh the browser, either select the configurations tab in PolicyCenter or click Refresh or Reload in the browser. The browser will now display the current configuration.
