Move Configurations within the Configuration Tree

Use the move function to move a PolicyCenter configuration, including its assigned units and any child configurations, to a different location within the PolicyCenter configuration tree. Only local attributes and settings specified within the configuration itself are moved with that configuration. Any classes and attributes the configuration inherits from a parent configuration are not moved; the configuration will leave these behind. Only the /default configuration cannot be moved.

If a configuration is moved under another parent configuration, the moved configuration, its assigned units, any child configurations will then inherit and apply settings from the new parent.

If a configuration is moved to the top of the configuration tree, the moved configuration will be comprised of its local settings only.

Notes: A child configuration will not inherit settings from a new parent if those settings are also defined within the child configuration. For example, if a configuration has a local /Inbound partition and moves under a parent with a different /Inbound partition, the child configuration's settings will override the settings from the parent. If you wanted the child configuration to apply the /Inbound partition from its parent, you would have to remove the override of the child configuration's local /inbound class.

Because moving a configuration will not move any attributes the configuration may have inherited from a parent, if a configuration has local classes that use an inherited host list, moving or copying this configuration will causes an error if the associated host list does not exist in the new parent as well. To work around this, ensure that the host list exists in the new parent configuration, or add the host list on the configuration to be moved, creating a local version of the host list that will be moved with the configuration. A parent configuration cannot be moved under its own child. Instead, use the copy function to create a new copy of the parent configuration under the child, then reassign the units to the new configuration.

If you see the message "The configuration has changed" in a pop-up window, close this window and refresh the browser information. To refresh the browser, either select the configurations tab in PolicyCenter or click Refresh or Reload in the browser. The browser will now display the current configuration.

To move a PolicyCenter configuration and its assigned units to another location:

  1. Click the move button on the upper toolbar. The configuration options window appears.  show screen

  2. Select a configuration you wish to move (except the /default configuration) from the Move Configuration drop-down list.

  3. Select the new destination from the Under drop-down list.

  4. (Optional) Select a new name for the moved configuration by entering a new configuration name into the And Rename it to field.

  5. Click the move button. A pop-up window will appear and ask you to confirm that you want to move the configuration. Click OK.

A status window will show which move operations have been processed, and which are still pending.  show screen This window will automatically close after all the move operations have been processed. Do not close the window or make any other changes in the PolicyCenter browser interface while processes are still pending, as this may result in incorrect or failed move operations.

See examples of traffic class behavior as a unit moves from group to group.
