PacketShapers must be correctly installed on the network and powered on before the units can be deployed via the PolicyCenter auto-deployment feature. The PacketShaper will only recognize a auto-deploy message received through the unit's OUTSIDE port.
Although where and how you install a PacketShaper varies depending upon your network topology, PacketShapers at branch offices generally sit between a WAN-link and/or Internet-link router, and a network hub or switch. The following procedure will connect a PacketShaper to this most common network topology. For instructions on installing a PacketShaper into this topology, see the PacketShaper Quick Start Guide. For other topologies, see Packeteer Deployment Topologies.
Note: If an unconfigured PacketShaper 3500 or 7500 unit is connected to the network only via that unit's management port, the unit can be auto-deployed through a subnet broadcast that does not specify a target IP. Note, however, that if a router between your PolicyCenter server and the unconfigured unit does not forward the subnet broadcast packets, the unit will not receive the autodeploy message.
