Publish a PolicyCenter Configuration

Publish an Entire Child Configuration to its Parent

The publish function allows a child configuration to copy its entire effective configuration of local and inherited attributes and settings to the configuration's own parent. As a child configuration is published, two things happen:

  1. First, the parent configuration is entirely cleared and then repopulated with the publishing configuration's local and inherited attributes and settings. These will appear on the parent configuration as local values.

  2. Next, the publishing child configuration is cleared. As a result, the child configuration will no longer have any overriding local values and will inherit all its attributes and settings from the new parent configuration.

Why does the publish function also clear the child configuration? Simply put, the publish function clears the child's attributes and settings so the child configuration can inherit those values from its parent. A child configuration's local settings always override those same settings inherited from its parent, so if the publish function did not clear the child configuration, its original local settings would completely supersede its new inherited configuration.

To publish a child configuration:

  1. Click the publish button on the upper toolbar. The configurations options window will open.  show screen

  2. Select the configuration to be published from the Publish Configuration drop-down list. Click publish.

  3. A pop-up window will ask you to confirm your selection. Click OK.

Publish an Individual Traffic Class from a Child Configuration to its Parent

To publish a local class (with all of its policies, etc.) from a child configuration to its parent:

  1. Click the manage tab in PolicyCenter.

  2. Select the configuration of the class you want be publish from the Editing Configuration drop-down list.

  3. Select a traffic class from the traffic tree in the left window pane.

  4. Click class, and then click publish.  Show screen

The class is removed from the child configuration and reappears as a local class on the parent configuration.  The published traffic class will now appear in blue on the child configuration's class tree.

Note: If a child configuration has host accounting enabled with categories assigned to its local classes, publishing that configuration to its parent configuration will delete and then recreate the parent's host accounting data files. As a result, any other child configurations of the same parent may lose some of their previous host accounting data.

See also: PolicyCenter Configuration Management for additional information on inherited and local traffic classes.
