Enable the Adaptive Response Plug-in

Download the Adaptive Response Plug-In from the Packeteer Support Site

The adaptive response plug-in contains information for each agent template and the default agents. Neither the default agents nor any new agents can be added until the adaptive response plug-in file has been downloaded and installed on your unit’s flash drive (and PolicyCenter server, if the unit is to be managed with a PolicyCenter configuration).

Note: The adaptive response feature requires that the unit it runs on has both PacketWise 7.0 or higher and at least 128MB of memory. Do not install the adaptive response plug-in on units with less than 128MB of memory.

If you are using the adaptive response feature with units in shared mode, the PolicyCenter file distribution server can fetch this plug-in for you. Otherwise, the adaptive response plug-in must be downloaded from the Packeteer plug-ins FTP site. There are two ways to download the plug-ins:

Try downloading the plug-ins with the PacketWise browser interface first. If this method doesn't work (perhaps because the corporate LAN is private or because a security policy or firewall is in place), download the plug-in file from the Packeteer support website using a computer that is not subject to these restrictions.

Upload the Plug-In File

After the plug-in file is saved on a computer on your network, you can FTP this file to your PacketShaper or PolicyCenter directory server. Place the plug-in file in the folder 9.256/plg on your PacketShaper, or the folder <install_directory>/PolicyCenter/plg on your PolicyCenter directory server.

Once the adaptive response plug-in file is in the correct location, issue the CLI command reset to reset the unit. When the unit reboots, it will recognize the plug-in file, and will create default agents on your unit. To activate this feature on PolicyCenter, use the Windows services panel (Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Services > Services) to stop and then restart the PolicyCenter service. When PolicyCenter restarts, it will recognize the plug-in file. Unlike individual PacketShapers, however, PolicyCenter will not have any default agents configured.

Note: If you plan on distributing the adaptive response plug-in from PolicyCenter to individual PacketShapers using PolicyCenter's file distribution feature, you must also place the plug-in in the folder <install_directory>/Packeteer/PolicyCenter/publish/plugins to add it to the PolicyCenter file distribution library.

Turn on the Adaptive Response Feature

The adaptive response feature is not turned on by default. To activate this feature and the default agents:

  1. Go to the basic setup page for your unit or PolicyCenter software.

  2. Turn the Adaptive Response setting to on.  show screen

  3. Click apply changes.

Note that after you initially enable adaptive response, all the status indicators on the info tab will be gray. The adaptive response dashboard will not display the red, green, or yellow indicators until the agents have had time to gather and analyze data (that is, when the agent has reported a score for the first interval). Some of the categories may not have any default agents, so these indicators will remain gray unless you create an agent in that category.
