Check the Compression Tunnel Status

Xpress works by creating compression tunnels between PacketShaper Xpress units. When compression is enabled, Xpress will automatically create and use a tunnel to transport compressed data between PacketShapers. The two Xpress units that have a compression tunnel between them are called tunnel partners. Each Xpress unit can have multiple tunnel partners — one tunnel to each compression-enabled PacketShaper Xpress on the network. If your Xpress unit has LAN Expansion Modules installed, each interface (built-in and LEM) can establish a compression tunnel between other Xpress units or interfaces on Xpress units. Note that you must configure each interface with an Xpress-IP address for this to work.

You can use the setup compression show CLI command to see who the tunnel partners are for the active PacketShaper. The output indicates the Tunnel Interface (main, upper, lower) of the tunnel partner.

  1. Access the CLI.
  2. Issue the setup compression show command.
  3. For each partner listed, check the Tunnel Status. Look up the message next to Tunnel Status in the table below.
Message Description
Normal Operation Compression is working properly between the active PacketShaper and that partner. Both Xpress units are compressing and decompressing data through a compression tunnel.

Decompressing

The tunnel partner is decompressing data, but is not compressing any data. Depending on your topology, this may be the desired situation. If not, this situation could be a temporary one that will rectify itself. First, try reissuing the setup compression show command in a few minutes; most likely the Tunnel Status will now say Normal Operation. If not, use the setup compression reprobe command to send another probe to look for a tunnel partner.
Compressing The tunnel partner is compressing data, but is not decompressing any data. See the previous item.
Partner not available The data from the active PacketShaper will not be compressed because the tunnel partner does not allow compression tunnel traffic from the active PacketShaper. On the tunnel partner, use the setup compression partners command to add the IP address of the active PacketShaper to its list of allowed tunnel partners.
Tunnel is not up The compression tunnel has not been created, for a variety of reasons. See Why Isn't There a Compression Tunnel?
