Define a Failover Configuration

The amount of bandwidth that the unit manages can change if a router fails over from a primary to a secondary link. PacketWise can be configured to detect this failover condition and enforce the new, lower link speed. A site router must be defined in the unit's basic configuration before defining a failover configuration.

PacketWise polls the site router, using SNMP, every two seconds to determine the status of the links. If the site router uses another link as a backup for a primary link, PacketWise uses the failover settings to adjust its link speed during the primary link outage. Failover status is reported on the Info page.

PacketWise will detect the end of an outage and revert to the original bandwidth allocation as soon as the router reports the primary link is up again.

Note: To define failover settings from PolicyCenter, you must first select a group and/or unit configuration from the Group: and Unit: drop-down lists at the top of the page.

Modifying Failover Settings

To configure failover settings:

1. Click the setup tab. The basic settings are displayed on the Setup page.

2. Verify that the site router setting is set to the router's IP address in the Basic Settings screen.  show screen

3. From the Choose Setup Page list, select failover. The failover configuration settings appear on the Setup page.  show screen

4. In the Failover Configuration window, define the router configuration and failover settings, as described in the following table.

Field Description
Read Community String Enter the SNMP password for router access so that PacketWise can use SNMP to read the configuration. If you do not specify a community string, PacketWise uses public.
WAN Link Primary Interface Enter the SNMP index number of the first router interface, where the number is from one (1) up to the number of interfaces on the router.
WAN Link Secondary Interface Enter the SNMP index number of the second router interface, where the number is from one (1) up to the number of interfaces on the router.
Backup Link Speed If the secondary link is serving as a backup link, set the backup link speed. Failover policies will take effect when the primary link fails. Rates may be specified as integer bits per second, followed by a “k” (thousands) or “M” (millions).

5. Click apply changes to update the settings.
