Easy Configure Overview

The Easy Configure feature offers a unique approach to bandwidth management in new PacketShaper units. Instead of creating policies and partitions yourself, you let Easy Configure do it for you. Your task is to assign your applications and services to categories (such as Mission Critical or Prohibited), and then Easy Configure automatically creates appropriate partitions and policies. You can enable Easy Configure during Guided Setup or in the browser user interface.

Who Should Use Easy Configure?

Note: The Easy Configure feature is not offered on PacketSeeker or PacketShaper ISP.

Easy Configure is recommended for enterprises that need to set up simple bandwidth allocation on new PacketShaper units — for example, to ensure adequate bandwidth for the company’s mission-critical applications and give low-priority to greedy non-business applications. It is not recommended for more complex situations, such as with Frame Relay, ATM, and PolicyCenter. In addition, you cannot use the dynamic partition or VLAN/MPLS tagging policy features with Easy Configure.

Easy Configure will create a new folder hierarchy in your traffic tree. It is recommended that you do a setup capture to preserve your old folder hierarchy before enabling Easy Configure. Should you wish to stop using Easy Configure and return to your original folder hierarchy, the capture script may be used to return your traffic tree to its original state.

Easy Configure Categories

The four categories you can assign traffic to are listed in the following table:

Category Description
Mission Critical For the most important applications on the network; high priority is given to these applications to keep them running smoothly and efficiently. Examples: database and interactive applications.
Average For applications that can be downgraded when resources are in contention, in order to give precedence to mission critical applications. Examples: email, file transfer, and messaging applications.
Low Priority For applications that can be used, but should not disrupt normal business operations; some delay is acceptable. Examples: background tasks that are more “tolerated” than “required.”
Prohibited For applications that are not permitted on the network

When the Easy Configure feature is enabled, PacketWise places newly discovered traffic classes in the Inbound/AutoDiscovered or Outbound/AutoDiscovered folders. Any classes that existed before you enabled Easy Configure are also moved into the AutoDiscovered folders. You can later analyze these classes and move them to the appropriate category. See Assign Categories to Classes.

Special Considerations

When creating classes manually with Easy Configure enabled, Packeteer has the following recommendations:

  • Add the class to one of the Easy Configure folders, not to /Inbound or /Outbound.
  • Do not create a class with a match-all rule. If you do, any class that is lower than the match-all class will never get hit.
  • Do not create exception classes. They interfere with bandwidth allocation to the Easy Configure partitions.
  • Do not enable the Traffic Discovery within Class option, except for Citrix classes.

Note that when Easy Configure is enabled, the following commands are not available on the class menu: move, copy, bulk operation, and add folder. These commands are unavailable because they could potentially interfere with the way Easy Configure operates.
